What am I doing in Vienna?

You might remember that last April I traveled to Austria from Ukraine to take en entrance exam at Graphische school (Höhere graphische bundeslehr und versuchanstal). Six month later I'm in Vienna, I wake up at 6 am every morning to go to classes at Graphische. Studying photography abroad was something I started talking about in high school, and now it's so weird and surreal to be on the other side of a dream.

After months of collecting documents, sorting all kinds of issues out, which just continued to pop up, waiting for visa and taking a gap year at my Kyiv university, in 16 hours I happened to be in Vienna and begin another new chapter. It's worth mentioning that I didn't take part in any program that allowed me to study here, I was doing all the paper work myself. If you have any questions regarding application and bureaucracy - write them in the comments below.

So in this blog post I want to give you a little overview on what I am studying and how my work week looks like.

I don't know most of the lessons names, as in our schedule we have only shortcuts, and what do those names, e.g. Media Design, mean anyway? So I gave them my own names. Even though we have a schedule, it varies every week while some teacher may cancel the lessons and we leave school earlier, go shoot something or visit an exhibition. Here's the glimpse on how my next week will look like.

All the lessons are taught in German, which means that for now I don't understand most of what they're saying. I can still talk with my classmates in German, so no worries, I'm not completely isolated here :)

Monday - we have film photography class, and then we go with our photo series class teacher to shoot some kind of abandoned train station. But before all of that I need to go to my insurance office as well as meet with my classmates at school, who kindly proposed to explain me physics, as we have a test in physics on Tuesday (face palm).

Tuesday - is the hardest day, because this is when we have all our theory classes: photoshop, theory or art, physics, chemistry, copyright. I think those teachers understand that these classes are not practical for us and don't make it look too scary and impossible to pass, as opposed to Ukrainian system.

Wednesday - we make presentations about photographer, have a marketing class and go for a photo exhibition. I was allowed to make a presentation in English - praise the Lord!

Thursday - we have 4.5 hour class of photo series! Each of our little group has to prepare 5 photo stories on the given topics by the end of the winter semester. But I'll make a separate post on what tasks we have. Then we have a class on structure of the camera, which is taught by the school director, and an economy class.

Friday - is different every time. We have one 3-4 hour long class with our class teacher, who also teaches Media Design and Theory of Art. Last time we had a portfolio review with former Graphische graduates.

The system of lessons and breaks differs from Ukrainian one. One lesson can last for 2-4 academic hours, but a teacher can make a break whenever he or she wants. And in general there are many interesting things and approaches to studying at this school which, for some reasons, are not yet applied in Ukraine, but I'll tell more about that in the next post.

If you have questions - please leave them in the comments below.

p.s. I mentioned earlier that I will make video blog about my experience of moving to Vienna and studying at Graphische, and I'm filming them! However, for now I don't have a place (computer/software) to edit them. I'll let you know when you're will be live.
